portrait

I’ve always loved capturing a portrait. A lot of artists will talk about making a portrait - and certainly that’s part of the deal in portraiture, but I also believe in capturing what makes the subject of the image the person they are.

Two of my formative mentors in particular guided me through learning to differentiate between making and capturing a portrait. First Billy Howard taught me to capture the person when I was a teenager and still pretty new to the cameras in my hands. Then in my 20s David LaChapelle taught me how to make a portrait, a scene, and entire worlds when I worked for, studied under, and assisted him in his Los Angeles studio as the co-studio manager and studio archivist.
